The American Cancer Society has noted that although many Ayurvedic therapies have not been extensively studied using Western research methods, scientific interest in Ayurveda continues to grow. Some herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda have already contributed to the development of modern medicines, while others are being investigated for their therapeutic potential.
Research supported by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) evaluated two Ayurvedic herbal formulations, MAK-4 and MAK-5. Laboratory studies reported encouraging findings against certain cancer cells and experimental tumors in animals. These results suggest potential areas for further clinical research, although additional human studies are necessary before drawing firm conclusions.
Supportive Care for Cancer and Parkinson's Disease
Clinical research conducted in India found that an Ayurvedic herbal formulation performed similarly to a commonly prescribed laxative in relieving constipation associated with pain medications used by cancer patients.
In separate small controlled clinical studies, certain Ayurvedic herbs were also reported to help reduce symptoms in individuals living with Parkinson's disease. While these early findings are promising, larger clinical trials are required to confirm their effectiveness.
Panchakarma and Cardiovascular Health

A study conducted in the United States in 1993 evaluated the effects of Panchakarma-based therapy on cardiovascular risk factors in adults.
Participants who completed the comprehensive Ayurvedic program experienced improvements in blood vessel function, demonstrated by enhanced circulatory dilation three months after treatment. Researchers also observed reductions in total cholesterol, lower markers of oxidative stress, and decreased anxiety levels, indicating potential benefits for overall cardiovascular wellness.
Ayurveda for Health Promotion
Researchers funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) compared an Ayurvedic lifestyle program with a conventional wellness program among healthy participants.
The Ayurvedic program included meditation, an Ayurvedic diet, and yoga, while the comparison group followed progressive muscle relaxation, a low-fat, low-salt diet, and aerobic exercise.
After one year, both groups reported improvements in health-related quality of life. Participants following the Ayurvedic program showed greater improvements in overall health perception and reported reduced reliance on prescription medications, highlighting the possible value of comprehensive lifestyle-based approaches.
Herbal Therapy for Scabies

A large clinical study conducted in India evaluated a combination of turmeric and neem (Azadirachta indica) for treating scabies.
The herbal preparation demonstrated a high treatment success rate, with most participants recovering within three to fifteen days. Researchers also noted that herbal therapies may produce fewer unwanted side effects compared with some conventional antiparasitic medications, although treatment decisions should always be guided by healthcare professionals.
Terminalia Arjuna and Heart Health
Researchers investigated the Ayurvedic herb Terminalia arjuna in patients with stable and unstable angina.
Among individuals with stable angina, the study reported a substantial reduction in episodes of chest discomfort during the treatment period. These findings have encouraged additional research into the herb's potential role in supporting cardiovascular health.
Mucuna pruriens for Parkinson's Disease
Scientists at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine studied the Ayurvedic herb Mucuna pruriens as a supportive treatment for Parkinson's disease.
During the 12-week study, participants experienced meaningful improvements in symptoms, while only a small number reported mild side effects. Researchers concluded that the herb deserved further investigation through larger clinical studies.
Ayurveda and Modern Scientific Research
Ayurveda has evolved through centuries of observation, clinical practice, and traditional knowledge. Today, researchers across the world are increasingly examining Ayurvedic therapies using modern scientific methods.
Although many Ayurvedic treatments require additional large-scale, high-quality clinical trials to fully establish their effectiveness, existing research suggests that several Ayurvedic herbs, therapies, and lifestyle practices may offer supportive benefits for overall health and wellness.
The continued integration of traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with evidence-based scientific research has the potential to expand healthcare options and encourage a more holistic approach to preventive and complementary care.
